Books, Books, Books

New from respected U of Georgia horticulturist Allan Armitage is this one on native plants for North American gardens. Published by Timber Press, it would be a nice companion for his earlier volumes on annual and perennials. As a deeply committed native plants gardener, I'm delighted to feature this beautiful new book.

New from Horticulture Magazine in the Gardener's Guide series is this one on using color in the landscape to create moods, frame spaces, and delight the eye. Also new is their "Perennials" guide. These two join a cornucopia of garden books available on their website below. Great magazine, too.

Natural Home & Garden Magazine

 Backissues 05-11 Images 11-05Cover2

This home and garden magazine specializes in everything "natural," a word used ever more loosely as the macro culture zeros in on the benefits of clean living. As for contents, think Martha Stewart's environmentalist little sister. At $19.95 this might be a sweet gift for your organic gardener friend or someone who wants to sound like one. The November/December issue is all about bedrooms–natural fiber mattresses, green designers balancing between Zen simplicity and luxury, and ten ways to make your bedroom an environmentally friendly sanctuary. There's a clever how-to on making an ice/greens/candle centerpiece, and they also have a nice little article about recycled package wrappings that I enjoyed, although the idea of having a gift wrapping party sounds pretty bizarre to me. These people must have too much time on their hands. Nice mag, though.

Starting Seeds DVD

 Startingseeds Video 200X193-1

If the book highlighted in the previous post seemed too esoteric, here's another way to help a gardener friend learn about the subject. It's a little more expensive at $19.99 but looks like it would be easier to understand in a short time. How about adding a gift certificate to one of the seed vendors like Burpee, Park

Seeds, Heirloom Seeds, Johnny's Seeds, or for something different, Seeds of Change (all organic)? You could do it all for under $50.

Seed Starters Handbook

 Newseed-150X220

New from the Garden Gate store is this handbook for the SERIOUS gardener at $15.95 ps. Whew...247 pages, softcover. If you know someone who obsesses all winter over seed catalogues looking for the perfect heirloom or hard-to-find seeds and then obsesses over starting them under perfect conditions, this could make you very popular with the recipient of your gift. Haven't read it, but anyone who can write 247 pages about starting seeds must know a lot about her subject. I wish her editors had mentioned the rule about apostrophes, however. You see this omission more and more, and it just drives me crazy!
