Wishbone Hammock

Plow Assets Images Shop Catalog 20238
Let's start now. Gardening is hard work, and summer is not that far away. So why not invest in a good, solid three-point hammock right now? It also, by the way, fits in tight spaces in case your garden is on your porch. Catch a few winks in between planting flats of annuals, pruning the roses and setting out the veggie seedlings. First things first.

The Butterfly Bench

 Sitebuildercontent Sitebuilderpictures Butterfly Bench 2
A garden bench that looks like a butterfly–lovely! It's made of steel, comes in verdigris or periwinkle and is available in three sizes from the very artistic designers at Cricket Forge. With a name like that, the company has to be great. Other benches: the celestial, leaf (with matching stool), dragonfly and peacock–all in appropriate colors. No doubt these items are in the "if-you-have-to-ask-don't-bother" price category. I didn't even look. It's nice to dream...

Illuminated Glass Globes

 Faqs Faqs R9 C1
Night orbs are handblown soda/lime glass globes that attach by undergound wire to any 12-volt lighting system. Their creator, LaSorgente Glass Studio, says they are "extremely durable, owing to their spherical shape, thick glass, and a 36 hour annealing process...and can withstand run-ins with lawnmowers, weed whackers, children, animals, heat and deep snow." The website is as beautiful as the product, which looks really gorgeous in the photos. Hand-blown glass does not come cheap, however. A single standard 8" orb with 1-2" stem is $395 plus s/h. Also available: water orbs with underwater cable and a movable version with 5" polished granite base.

Frank Gehry Outdoor Furniture

Images Subcat Titles Sub Out Gehry
Oh, mama. THE gift for the modernist gardener who really has everything. The sofa is $1,200 but the twist cubes are only $200. What a statement for the back yard. Frank Gehry is, of course, the expressionist post-modern architect who designed the magnificent Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, among many other high-profile buildings. I (along with many others) love the sweeping lines of the museum. It's interesting to see that design model translated into outdoor furniture. Not quite right for my wild garden but could be stunning in other settings.

MaXXDaddy Folding Lawn Chairs

 Images Open-Monster

This just in from KoolestProducts.com is described by them as the Maxxdaddy Monster. "It's a beast." Rated for 1400 pounds, it comes with a lifetime warranty on all parts. Sure looks good, but...is this a chair for an elephant? An ice sculpture of an elephant? Uncle Charley may have gained a little last year, but 1400 pounds? Of course if you need a folding chair that is rated for 1400 pounds, this definitely looks like it would do the job. Only $99 plus shipping.

Dedon's Obelisk Furniture

 Media 1 20051021-Dedon-1

This is that hand-woven wicker coffee table and four lounge chairs you've been looking for. What could be more convenient than to be able to stack them up into an obelisk when you're finished using them? You could have several in your garden and tell friends they're anti-war sculptures or seeds dropped from passing starships, then voila! You take them apart, sit your guests down on the stools, I guess you'd call them, and bring out the refreshments. I'm impressed. Are you impressed? Truth is, the Dedon site is interesting, and I will feature it in a later post as soon as I figure out how to get some hard information from them. Their furniture is made of Hularo fiber and is virtually indestructible so they say. More later.

Making a Grass Couch

 Images Homefeatsodcouch-1

Here's a new twist on lawn furniture. Who wants the old-fashioned kind when you could have a real conversation piece? The instructions are a bit daunting, but if you've always yearned for your own bluegrass lounge (you can even use wheatgrass for a really healthy couch), here is the way to make your dream come true.

Using soil, waferboard, chickenwire, nails, chopsticks (really) gypsite, Gromulch, wood stakes and, oh yes, the all-important sod, you might be able to create one before summer is over. Fill up all that extra time over Labor Day weekend. And if you figure out how to mow it, let us know!

Birilli For You

 Www.Smithandhawken.Com Images Product 7 762682-1

Ninepins. Doesn't that have a ring? Right out of an old-fashioned story. Isn't thunder supposed to be caused by the weather gods playing ninepins in the sky or something like that? You don't have to be a supernatural figure, however, to enjoy playing games in your garden, and the authentic Italian ninepins game of birilli could be just the perfect one for a late summer afternoon.

This very cool-looking wood set with two brightly-colored balls conjures the image of a family picnic, checked tablecloths, bowls piled high with veggies and greens picked fresh that morning, handmade pasta, a great red wine and homemade bread, with cheese and grapes for dessert. The winner gets the tiramisu. Ahhhh, the leafy life!
